FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS, & DESIGN/BUILD PROFESSIONALS

The Cultivated Practice

A private advisory membership for designers ready to elevate the business side of their practice.

A Structured Environment for Professional Growth

The Cultivated Practice is an intentional space for growing a landscape design business with clarity and purpose.

Inside this advisory circle, we approach the craft of running a design practice with the same level of care and rigor we bring to landscape design itself. As the leader of this small group, Mardi draws on her experience as a designer, contractor, business owner and clinical social worker to offer insight grounded in the realities of a working design practice.

This is a small, curated membership, limited to fifteen designers. The scale is intentional, allowing relationships to develop over time and creating the trust and familiarity that support thoughtful, strategic dialogue.

This is not a passive membership or a casual community. It is a working group where we apply business ideas to the real world of a design studio. Within this circle, designers actively examine the structure of their practice, refine their positioning, strengthen their communication, and build businesses that are profitable, enjoyable, and sustainable.

A Message from Mardi

Who This Is For

Mardi Dover | The Cultivated Practice | Private Membership for Landscape Designers

The Cultivated Practice is for landscape architects, landscape designers, and design/build professionals who are growing a business that attracts the right clients, communicates value clearly, and operates profitably.

This is a small advisory circle design to support focused, meaningful work over time.

This advisory circle is for you if:

  • You are actively working in or starting your design practice and want thoughtful guidance as you make real-time decisions.

  • You are ready to refine how your business operates, not just learn new ideas.

  • You are open to examining your process, communication, and positioning with honesty.

  • You value thoughtful professional conversation, rather than surface level advice.

  • You appreciate being in conversation with other designers who are doing the work alongside you.

  • You want accountability as you build a business that is both profitable and deeply aligned with how you want to work.

The Focus of The Cultivated Practice:  Four Core Pillars

Each quarter of the year is devoted to a single pillar, with a concentrated focus on two to three areas,
creating the conditions for sustained, in-depth work and integration.

1.

Defining Your Position

Clarifying what makes your work distinct and how you communicate that value to the right clients.

Within this cycle, we may explore:

  • Defining your ideal client and aligning your work accordingly

  • Articulating your value in consultations, proposals, and conversations

  • Identifying what differentiates your work in a competitive market

  • Refining your portfolio and messaging, so they accurately reflect your caliber of work

2.

Structuring Your Practice

Designing the systems, processes, and offerings that support a professional and efficient business.

Within this cycle, we may explore:

  • Developing a clear and repeatable design process

  • Structuring scope, pricing, and service offerings to reflect your value

  • Creating workflows that reduce friction and support consistency

  • Building systems for onboarding, communication, and project management

3.

Shaping the Project Experience

Strengthening how you guide clients and collaborators through the design and build process.

Within this cycle, we may explore:

Communicating design intent effectively to clients and contractors

  • Cultivating collaborative relationships that support both design integrity and project success

  • Navigating difficult conversations and setting appropriate boundaries

  • Gathering and using client feedback to strengthen your portfolio, proposals, and future work

4.

Sustaining Your Business

Building a practice that is not only profitable, but also sustainable and aligned with how you want to work.

Within this cycle, we may explore:

  • Structuring your business for long-term profitability and stability

  • Preventing burnout and supporting your creativity through thoughtful pacing and boundaries

  • Making strategic decisions about growth and scaling

  • Aligning your business model with your values, goals, and lifestyle

These four pillars shape the work of the advisory circle. Together, they create a framework for examining both the practical and relational aspects of a design practice, supporting thoughtful decisions, meaningful progress, and a business that can evolve over time.

What Happens Inside The Cultivated Practice

The Cultivated Practice is structured as a focused, working environment for examining and strengthening every aspect of your landscape design business.

Rather than offering one-off ideas or surface-level fixes, this advisory circle creates the space for thoughtful analysis, intentional decision-making, and meaningful progress over time.

Each quarter is centered on a single pillar, with a deliberate focus on one to two areas. Within that structure, each month introduces a focused area of work through a combination of lecture, resources, and guided conversation.

Members are supported in applying these ideas directly within their practice, allowing for reflection, refinement, and steady progress over time. This is a place where the work is not only discussed, but actively engaged with and developed in real time.

This is not simply a membership. It is a disciplined, supportive environment for landscape designers who are ready to engage their business with clarity, intention, and a higher level of strategic thinking.

What's Included in The Cultivated Practice?

The work of the advisory circle is supported through a structured combination of sessions, resources, and ongoing dialogue, all designed to support thoughtful application and steady progress over time.

Monthly Lecture + Resource Materials

A focused, strategic deep dive into a key topic related to the current pillar.

Each month includes an on-demand lecture, paired with a practical resource designed to support application within your business.

Lectures are released two weeks prior to the Strategy Studio, allowing time to engage with the material and come prepared for discussion.

Strategy Studio Sessions

A live monthly session where focused teaching and strategic conversation support real-time application within your practice.

First Tuesday of each month, 4:00 to 5:15 pm Eastern

The Strategy Studio is where concepts from the monthly lecture move into application. These sessions combine teaching with strategic discussion, creating space to work through real decisions within your practice.

At times, we will also explore practice scenarios or member case studies, allowing the group to learn from real experiences within the profession.

Open Forum Discussions

A dedicated space for questions and professional dialogue, offering thoughtful feedback and insight on your business.

Third Tuesday of each month, 4:00 to 5:15 pm Eastern

The Open Forum functions as Mardi’s office hours, where members receive specific, considered feedback.

Questions are submitted in advance to keep conversations focused and valuable for the group.

Members are encouraged to attend even without a specific question, as hearing others’ challenges often leads to valuable insight within your own practice

Ongoing Discussion Board

A continuous space for conversation, feedback, and shared insight between sessions, supporting connection and momentum within the group.

Members are encouraged to contribute regularly by sharing a question, insight, or reflection.

The strength of the advisory circle comes from the thoughtful participation and professional generosity of its members.

Resource Library Access

A growing collection of professional resources designed to support your work as it evolves over time, including:

• Lecture recordings
• Downloadable resource materials
• Strategic frameworks

Membership Structure

Limiting the circle to 15 members allows the group to function as a true professional advisory circle, where trust develops and each designer has the space to bring real questions and engage in meaningful discussion.

Because the structure of the practice is ongoing, you may join at any time. While we move through the same core pillars each year, the topics and materials within those pillars evolve, allowing both new and returning members to engage the work at a deeper level.

New members commit to an initial six-month period, creating the consistency needed for trust, depth, and real momentum to develop within the group.

After the first six months, membership continues on a month-to-month basis.

Participation

The Cultivated Practice is built on the idea that members will engage thoughtfully with the material, participate in conversations, and contribute to the professional environment we are building together.

This circle values commitment, reflection, and interaction, which results in elevated conversations within the group and meaningful progress within each member’s business.
