Step Into the Spotlight: Growing Your Design Practice Through Speaking Engagements

Becoming a trusted voice in your community.

There is a powerful maropportunity sitting quietly inside most landscape design practices, and many designers overlook it.

Educational talks.

Garden clubs. Retail nurseries. Civic organizations. Homeowner associations. Libraries. Local extension offerings. Small business groups. Lifelong learning institutes. Gardening symposiums.

These rooms are filled with curious audiences. And often, they are filled with potential clients and connectors.

One of our favorite clients invited us to speak TWICE to her garden club: once before the installation and once after (shown here where the members are enjoying their meeting under the arbor we designed.)

You as a thought leader.

The real value of offering educational presentations goes far beyond marketing.

It positions you as a thought leader.

When you stand in front of a room and teach, you are no longer simply a service provider. You become a trusted guide. An educator. A professional with a point of view. That shift elevates your brand in a way that is hard to do with traditional advertising.

Here are a few of the benefits of educational talks:

1. Authority and credibility. Teaching clarifies your expertise in the public eye. People assume that if you are invited to speak, you are respected.

2. Engaged clients. Educational spaces attract engaged, thoughtful homeowners. These are often the clients who value design process, understand investment, and appreciate the "why" behind your design decisions.

3. Refined messaging. Every time you give a talk, you sharpen your ideas. You learn which stories resonate. You discover which concepts spark questions. Over time, your communication becomes more confident and strategic.

4. Expanded professional network. Nursery owners, club leaders, and event organizers can become long term relationships. Many of my best referrals have come from these partnerships.

How to present like a pro:

🌱 Start with one strong topic. Choose a subject that reflects your design philosophy. Not just “Top 10 Plants for Shade,” but something that expresses how you think. For example, designing outdoor rooms, creating transitions, layering a garden, or using art and ornament to deepen meaning.

🌱 Create a clear one paragraph description. Organizers need language they can easily share with their members. Make it concise, compelling, and benefit driven.

🌱 Develop professional visuals. High quality images matter. Your presentation should feel polished and intentional. It reinforces the experience of working with you.

🌱 Build relationships with hosts. Reach out personally. Offer value first. Ask what their members are most interested in learning. Tailor your content to their audience.

🌱 Arrive early and stay afterward. The most valuable conversations often happen before and after the presentation. Build margin into your schedule so you are not rushing out the door.

🌱 Have a next step for the attendees. Include a simple way for attendees to stay connected. A newsletter sign up. A consultation link. A downloadable guide. Teaching opens the door. Make sure there is a path forward.

🌱 Prepare a thoughtful handout or takeaway. A checklist for the garden like "Fall Garden Prep Guide" printed on heavy paper. A giveaway with your logo on it. A branded graph paper sketch pad. Seed packets with a custom label featuring a message from you. A consultation credit card "$100 Design Consultation Credit for Attendees" with an expiration date.

Speaking has been one of the most meaningful and strategically effective parts of my own practice. And it is fun to stand in front of other garden lovers and share your knowledge, aligning beautifully with the work we are called to do - helping others see the landscape as an integral part of home.
